DCA Travelers Dodge Security Chaos Seen Nationwide

WASHINGTON, D.C.
— As a partial government shutdown enters its fifth week, travelers at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) are finding themselves in a rare "eye of the storm." While major hubs like Houston and New York report record-breaking security wait times of up to four hours, DCA has managed to maintain surprisingly stable operations—for now.

As of Thursday morning, March 26, 2026, TSA checkpoints at Reagan National were reporting wait times of 15 minutes or less, a stark contrast to the national "Spring Break under siege" narrative.

A Tale of Two Realities

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) budget stalemate has triggered a massive staffing crisis. Nationwide, over 3,100 TSA employees called out of work this week, with resignation numbers climbing past 480 as officers face missed paychecks

At Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) and New York’s JFK, the situation is dire. Travelers there are facing lines that snake through terminals and out the doors. However, DCA has benefited from its status as a critical hub for federal and business travel.

"We are seeing unprecedented disruption across the system," said Ha Nguyen McNeill, TSA’s Deputy Administrator, in a testimony before the House Homeland Security Committee on Wednesday. "Employees are receiving eviction notices and selling plasma to make ends meet. The security of our transportation system is being significantly undermined."

Why DCA is Holding Steady

Several factors are helping Reagan National avoid the "four-hour" fate of other airports:

  • High TSA Presence: Given its proximity to the Capitol, the airport maintains a robust staffing floor.

  • ICE Reinforcements: Following a directive from the White House, ICE agents have been deployed to major airports to assist with non-screening duties, allowing TSA officers to focus strictly on checkpoints

  • Traveler Preparation: DCA passengers, many of whom are frequent flyers, are increasingly utilizing TSA PreCheck and CLEAR, which remain operational despite intermittent closures of these lanes in other cities.

Weekend Warning: Metro Closures Ahead

While security lines are moving, getting to the airport remains a challenge. WMATA has confirmed that rail service between Pentagon City and National Airport will be suspended this coming weekend for ongoing construction on the Crystal City station entrance.

Travelers are urged to use free shuttle buses or ride-sharing services, but should account for an additional 20–30 minutes of transit time.
