Sony Announces Massive Global Price Hike for PS5 Lineup

Sony has just sent shockwaves through the gaming community with a major announcement on March 27, 2026. If you’ve been waiting to pick up a PlayStation 5 Pro, you may want to act before next week.

TOKYO — In a move that has caught many gamers off guard, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) officially announced a significant global price increase across its entire PlayStation 5 hardware family. Effective April 2, 2026, the cost of the PS5, PS5 Pro, and even the PlayStation Portal will see double-digit percentage jumps in most major markets.

The PS5 Pro, which launched in late 2024 at $699.99, is seeing the steepest climb. After a smaller adjustment last year, this new $150 hike brings the premium console's price tag to a staggering $899.99 in the U.S. (£789.99 in the UK / €899.99 in Europe).

New Global Pricing (Effective April 2, 2026)

PS5 Pro$899.99£789.99€899.99
PS5 (Disc)$649.99£569.99€649.99
PS5 Digital$599.99£519.99€599.99
PS Portal$249.99£219.99€249.99

Why the Price Jump?

Sony cited "continued pressures in the global economic landscape" as the primary driver. Industry analysts point to two major factors:

  1. The AI Hardware Race: Global demand for high-end RAM and SSD components has skyrocketed due to the AI boom, significantly increasing manufacturing costs for Sony.

  2. Economic Volatility: Persistent inflation and shifting trade tariffs have made the "old" pricing models unsustainable for the company’s hardware margins.

PSSR 2.0: The Silver Lining

Despite the "sticker shock," Sony is sweetening the deal for Pro owners by rolling out PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) 2.0. This upgraded AI-driven upscaler is designed to deliver even sharper 4K images at higher framerates.

Major titles already confirmed to support the updated tech include:

  • Resident Evil Requiem (The first title to utilize PSSR 2.0)

  • Monster Hunter Wilds

  • Silent Hill f

  • Crimson Desert

  • Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

The "GTA 6" Strategy

The timing of the hike is particularly notable. With Grand Theft Auto VI looming on the horizon for late 2026, Sony appears to be bracing for a massive surge in demand. By adjusting prices now, the company ensures profitability during what is expected to be the biggest software launch in gaming history.

Expert Tip: If you're in the market for a console, this weekend is effectively your "last call" to secure current pricing before the April 2 deadline.
